Navi Mumbai: Vikas Tak, the 33-year-old driver of a septic tank cleaning vehicle, and 23-year-old manual scavenger Chandan Jaiswal died of suffocation after falling into a septic tank in Sonari village, Uran.
The tragedy was reported on Monday afternoon. Tak and Jaiswal, originally from Uttar Pradesh, lived in Panvel. They had taken the sewage suction truck (septic tank cleaning vehicle) to clean a tank of a Kashinath tandel. After most of the work was completed, Jaiswal entered the septic tank to remove the remaining waste. However, he began to complain of suffocation. While trying to pull him out, Tak lost his balance and they both fell into the tank and died.
Several villagers took them to the Indira Gandhi Rural Hospital in Uran where they were declared dead on arrival. The senior physician Dr. Babaso Kalel confirmed death by suffocation. Nhava Sheva police have charged property owner Kashinath Tandel, cleaning contractor Vishal Munjale and vehicle owner Amol Khutale with negligence under BNS and the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013.
