ADA Corners and Storm Drains on SE Washington – Montavilla News

In May, commuters pushed past street attendants working on sidewalk corners and storm sewers along SE Washington Street east of 82nd Avenue. Over the next few months, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will construct new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps on SE Stark and Washington streets between SE 80th Avenue and Interstate 205 to align streets, improve stormwater management, and expand the pedestrian zone to make people more visible to motorists.

Cement masons are currently working on the corners of SE Washington Street at the intersection of SE 90th Avenue. Simultaneously, drainage teams are installing new mesh boxes and connecting pipes at SE 88th Avenue. Roadside stormwater drains collect stormwater before it pools at the base of the ADA ramps, preventing roadway flooding during heavy rainfall.

The 2023 summer construction season will continue to impact the Stark-Washington connection. PBOT will reconstruct many curves along both roads. Drivers should exercise caution when driving and pedestrians should expect to cross the road at times to get around closed corners. Cyclists should exercise extreme caution near roadworks as they may have to switch lanes of traffic to avoid obstacles.
