Advanced Septic Systems Are A Valid Sewer Alternative in Somers

If someone thinks his position is right and good, he should be able to defend it with only the truth. It saddens me to respond to so many misrepresentations about these systems that Ms. Anderson referred to in her article letter last week (“Advanced Septic Systems Are Not a Solution for Shenorock, Lincolnndale).

We’re not suggesting that the new systems are as effective. I claim they are more environmentally friendly than the peekskill system for our river.

Extended systems are permitted wherever a system fails. If our communities need sewers, it means we have faulty systems! In this case, these advanced systems can be used. The county does NOT prohibit these systems; They exist in Shenorock and Bedford. The $ 10 million East of Hudson funding would pay for these failing systems at no cost to the resident, and there would still be money left to actually dredge and ventilate the lake.

These systems cost between $ 5,000 and $ 22,000. The maintenance fee is $ 375 per year. Pumps last seven to 10 years. These systems run on around two amps, which is the equivalent of two 100 watt light bulbs. This is cheaper than $ 1,187 a year for sewers.

These systems do not require any special additives or cleaning agents.

Ms. Anderson’s biggest misconception is that the $ 10 million can only be used for sewers. The fact is that in point 3 of the Memorandum of Agreement of the East of Hudson Water Quality Fund it is stated that “the rehabilitation or replacement of sewage systems in certain areas will fail or will likely fail”.

It is just wrong to send our problem to the Hudson River instead of solving it yourself with these new systems.

After all, my main reason for not wanting sewers is financial because we are at the mercy of powers beyond our reach, and I don’t think we will get funding in this economy. If we don’t, and the city government borrows $ 50.7 million to complete this project, our annual cost can go as high as $ 2,700.
