Alabama residents needs to take precautions to prevent freezing pipes
Local counties are experie
ncing freezing temperatures so it is a good reminder to take precautions to prevent your pipes from freezing.
One of the most common ways people keep their pipes from freezing is by leaving water running while the temperature is below freezing.
“It is recommended to leave you sinks on and turn it on to just a steady stream,” said Ander’s Hardware Manager J.R. Lipscomb. “As long as the water is flowing through the pipes it’ll keep it from freezing.”
It is important to do this for all sinks in the house, including the kitchen and bathrooms, anytime the temperature is expected to get below freezing. It does not matter whether you use hot or cold water as long as you leave one of them on, then you shouldn’t have to worry. After leaving the water running you can leave your cabinets open to help the warm air circulate.
Another effective way to keep your pipes from freezing is by covering any outside faucets. This single step could make a huge difference on whether or not your pipes freeze.
“The most important thing is to keep your faucets, especially your outdoor faucets, covered,” said Lipscomb You can use something like styrofoam, slip on faucet covers, you can even use a rag and wrap it with duck tape. Anything to keep it from the frost.”
If your pipes are frozen, you can turn up the heat in the house and if it is not fixed soon, always call a plumber for assistance. If your pipes burst you need to cut off your water and call a plumber immediately.
