Architect designs GENIUS built-in clothes horse for clothes under the sink

  • The Melbourne father was fed up with clunky, freestanding, collapsible drying racks
  • The rack can support 65 kilograms and slides away neatly every time

An architect has revealed how he designed an under-sink clothes dryer in his laundry after disappointing with collapsible options.

Germany-born father Wilko Dohring, 46, added the hidden rack to his Melbourne home in the middle of the century and said it was much better because it folds up neatly and doesn’t get in the way.

The frame can be folded out of a drawer under the washbasin and can be expanded if necessary to hold more laundry.

The dad has a TikTok account dedicated to his incredible renovations and told Daily Mail Australia he loves digging into the tools and creating clever storage solutions.

“I just didn’t like anything else standing around banging against walls etc, so I tried to put it on a train – walls were always broken with the clothes horse, so this solution avoids that,” he said.

His ironing board is also hidden in a specially made drawer in the laundry.

The architect says the clothes horse is rated for 65 kilograms, which makes it sturdy enough for most people’s washing needs.

“That’s impressive, I would have feared it would sag with a full load of laundry, a great idea,” said one woman.

While others said the rack was a great alternative for hanging anything outside.

“I have extreme hay fever and I can’t dry anything outside, so that’s perfect,” said one woman.

But not everyone was enthusiastic about the built-in rack idea.

Some claim it is “completely useless” because it blocks the laundry counter.

“You can’t use the counter or the drawers, you can’t use pegs, you can’t hang long things without folds, the water drips on the floor, and you need a big room,” complained one man.

Some people got confused and thought the rack was meant for dishes rather than clothes.

And others thought the rack was in a kitchen and couldn’t understand why clothes were being dried there.

But people rushed to defend the architects, saying the room was more like a laundry than a kitchen.

Others stated that washing from a machine usually doesn’t drip so the floor would be fine.

He also cleared up some of the other concerns people had, saying he would use the line when it was raining outside and still have access to the sink and back door when it was in use.
