Benton Harbor, Michigan, announced that it will be accepting offers from contractors to replace its lead water pipelines after it found elevated levels of lead in its water supply.
A report in the Detroit Free Press report said that federal and state regulations require about 2,800 service lines to be removed over the next 14 to 15 years due to the excess of action levels on lead. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, D, promised to spend millions of dollars last month to replace them within 18 months.
“We’re excited to be making this announcement here in town [on bids]. I know it will be gladly accepted, “Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad said in an interview.
