The government has allocated RM150 million to local authorities (PBT) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) to combat the increasing threat of flash floods.
This funding allocation aims to ensure proactive flood risk mitigation measures through two key activities:
- Drain cleaning
- Local authorities will carry out routine cleaning of clogged drains to prevent water accumulation during heavy rains.
- Maintenance will focus on urban and suburban areas where flash flooding has occurred in the past, particularly during the monsoon season.
- Clearing blockages caused by dirt, leaves or uncollected trash ensures a more consistent water flow and reduces the likelihood of flash flooding.
- River dredging
- JPS will oversee the dredging of rivers and waterways to remove accumulated mud, sand and waste that impedes water flow.
- This initiative will help deepen river channels and increase their ability to accommodate heavy rainfall runoff without overflowing.
- Priority will be given to rivers in high-risk zones identified due to past flooding.
