how big is this place

My husband and I traveled to Unity weekly when his grandmother lived there. Every time we drove, we passed this stately brick home tucked away off the street, just off Main Street. I have always loved the elegance of the place and imagined it must be beautiful on the inside. When I saw it on realtor.com I couldn’t resist taking a look at the pictures which show a 3 bedroom 2 bath house that is even more amazing than I could have imagined. The home has been completely restored with lustrous pine floorboards, a winding spiral staircase and multiple fireplaces. But it’s the history of the place that surprised me.

When was it built and how is it connected to Bates College?

The Hezekiah Chase House as it stands was built in 1826. The 6 acre lot was purchased by Stephen Chase in 1782 and he built a Cape style house there sometime around 1810. This original house is the old part of the current house. Stephen’s son Hezekiah built the brick part of the house in 1826. He raised his family here, including his son Joseph, who had a son named George in 1844. George Colby Chase, a learned boy, would grow up to be the second President of Bates College.

How much do you want for it? (Can we see inside?)

I think I would tell this story to all visitors if this were my house. It could be yours as it is currently for sale and listed on realtor.com by Stephanie Cross with Better Homes & Garden Real Estate/The Masiello Group. For $949,000, you could be the next owner of a piece of Maine history. Check out the inside and you’ll be sold.
