Work to repair a gas pipe in Burnley town center is taking longer than expected.
Cadent teams began investigating the source of the gas smell under Royle Road, near the Active Way roundabout, the weekend before last.
After digging down to a pipe that runs beneath that junction, it became clear what kind of repair work was needed – and that it would take longer than originally hoped.
Two large excavations were required – each about five meters wide and two meters deep.
Cdaent said necessary repair work on a gas pipe in Royle Road, Burnley, is taking longer than expected
This has required the closure of one lane of Royle Road (towards the Active Way roundabout) as well as impacting Active Way itself. The ongoing works have caused congestion on the roads.
Due to work completed this week, the impact on Active Way was removed this weekend.
Remaining work to complete repairs under Royle Road will continue this week. If everything goes according to plan, engineers hope to reopen the road by the end of this week.

Cadent's teams dug a deep pit and then repaired the pipe. You will be working on the line while the gas is “energized” (the gas remains on).
