Candles inspired by food and nature at Kitchen Sink Candle Co.

It took Liz and Matt Landry courage and passion to open their Bolton store Kitchen Sink Candle Co. last November amid the pandemic. The couple, both chefs, started making candles as a hobby and now produce more than 60 varieties ($ 16 and $ 18). They started with food scents, of course, and then added herbal and floral flavors, sea and sky, and earthy and woody flavors. “Since we’re cooks, we loved the idea of how candles associate smells with memories, just like cooking,” says Liz. “We always think about foods that translate well into a candle.” The duo buys and mixes scented oils to add seductive flavors such as lemon and blueberry biscuits, vanilla and pumpkin cakes, sugared tangerines, cinnamon buns, grapefruit and black tea create. “There are many details and a lot of love in our candles,” she says. The couple use natural soy wax (instead of paraffin wax, a petroleum by-product) and follow certain techniques, like carefully mixing the wax so that the scent is absorbed by the whole candle rather than loaded from above, Liz says. Mixing different oils requires fine balance and a light hand. “You don’t want the scents to hit you over the head, which can be overwhelming,” she says.

In addition to their candles, the couple sells bath and beauty products, including Beekman 1802 goat milk lotions and specially made soaps from 62Soaps of Stow and Newgrange Farm of Bolton. (The little shop might remind Schitt’s Creek fans of Rose Apothecary.) There are Pillows & Things of Clinton tea towels and other craft items. Specialties include Aunt Dalie’s pasta, Parker’s Maple Barn’s maple syrup, Kitchen Garden Farm’s salsas, and a variety of sweets and candies. The store recently added a “refill station” where customers can fill their own plastic bottles with shampoo, lotion, dish soap and all-purpose cleaner. Whether you are looking for a gift or something pleasant and aromatic for yourself, this charming shop is a place to breathe, relax and smile.

Kitchen Sink Candle Co. is located at 713A Main St., Bolton; 978-779-2721. The candles are also available at some farmers’ markets in the area; Visit www.kitchensinkcandle.com.
