WASHINGTON (Nexstar) – Flags flew over the U.S. Capitol on Friday halfway through the staff to honor Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died Thursday of injuries sustained in Wednesday’s riot.

Both the FBI and the Washington Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Squad are investigating his killing. Authorities said Sicknick collapsed after returning to his office after being attacked by the rioters. The troop’s 13-year-old veteran was rushed to hospital and died the next day.

President-elect Joe Biden said: “Our condolences and concerns go to his families and those responsible should be held accountable.”

Biden later said the mob was “terrorists, domestic terrorists. The difference is that this was actively promoted by a seated President of the United States. “

Congressman Tim Ryan, an Ohio Democrat, said more than 50 other officials were also seriously injured and 15 were hospitalized after being attacked by the pro-Trump mob.

“These guys hit the Capitol Police in the head with lead pipes,” said Ryan.

Some of these pipes and other weapons were disguised as flagpoles. In other cases, fire extinguishers were only carried and used to attack officers and property.

Steven Sund, police chief of the U.S. Capitol, announced his resignation on Thursday. Lawmakers also want to conduct research into unwillingness and failure to gather information as many right-wing groups posted threats on social media before the attack.
