Chicago’s free lead pipe replacement program expanding; Homes built before 1986 eligible for application

CHICAGO (WLS) – The Chicago Water Department is expanding its program to replace lead pipes in homes built before 1986 free of charge.

To be eligible, you must be living in the household and have an income of $83,250 or less for a family of four.

Families with children or with elevated lead levels will be prioritized, but they no longer need to meet these benchmarks to apply.

After the application is approved, the Department of Water Management will replace the main water supply line from the house to the water line on the street.
