Chicopee hydrant flushing begins, residents can expect discolored water and lower pressure

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Department of Water for the City of Chicopee has started its annual hydrant flushing program in the Chicopee Center area.

Hydrant flushing is an attempt to remove sediment that builds up in the water system. The flush is expected to end on October 28 in the Chicopee Falls neighborhood.

Residents can expect temporarily discolored water and lower water pressure.

The water department offers these suggestions:

  • If you notice discolored water after flushing your street, consider running your cold water through a faucet for 5-10 minutes (bathtubs are the best choices) or until the water runs clear.
  • Do not use hot water as the dirty water can get into your water heater and potentially damage it.
  • Do not run your washing machine when you have dirty water as it can stain your clothes.

If your water does not clear after a few minutes, please call the Chicopee Water Department during regular business hours at 413-594-3420.
