City of Flint finishing lead pipe replacement program means more orange barrels and closed roads

FLINT, Michigan (WYRT) – (May 25, 2021) – The City of Flint is ramping up its lead pipe replacement program.

This is also why you may have noticed lots of orange barrels and blocked roads while trying to get around the city.

The construction made for tricky trips and caused some headaches along the way.

While it is helping the city take a step forward, we tested to see how much time these projects can add to your drive.

It took a typical three-minute drive to our main studio to a ten-minute detour that instead took us all down Court Street to Dort Highway and then back on the other side of Lapeer.

“It’s tough because it makes a great inconvenience. People still have to come around and do things. People are still working. You know what I mean? I have to look after their children, ”said Curtis Williams, a Flint resident.

We spoke to City Engineer Mark Adas, who says the current closures are for Flint’s FAST Start tube replacement program, which should be completed by the end of 2019.

Residents like Gwendolyn Richardson say she waited so long and she is glad the job is finally done.

“Although it’s an inconvenience, it means progress. Something good is happening. It means we’re moving on. While it was and still is a terrible experience, we have to look at some of the positives that are coming on the other side, ”said Richardson.

In the meantime, drivers should plan to leave early to get to their destination on time. While driving, be prepared to slow down and follow the detours.

James Richardson, a Flint resident, says he’s using the construction as an excuse to get around more on foot.

“We’ve been locked up for a year and a half. Take it and go for a walk. Go for a walk. In some places, you can get around the city without using your vehicle. Just go out there and go for a walk. Look at the orange cones. If you are struggling, get out of your vehicle and take a walk. That’s the greatest, ”said Richardson.

Flint’s City Engineer says the current closures should only last about a week, but next month work on the I-69 bridge and railroad will result in another closure of Lapeer Road.
