CUC: Chalan Kiya sewer repair will be finished by October | News

THE W-6 Sewer Lift Station Elimination project at Chalan Kiya will be completed by October 2021, Commonwealth Utilities Corp.-water and wastewater department engineer Nicolette Villagomez said.

“CUC would like to remind the general public that given the amount of construction activity that is occurring in the area, motorists are advised to slow down near the project site and heed traffic control direction and devices,” she added. “Please proceed with caution when driving near and through the construction zone.”

CUC is also asking community members to avoid walking through the project area.

According to Villagomez, “The W-6 Sewer Lift Station Elimination consists of the installation of a total of 1,240 linear feet of 10-inch gravity sewer main, 15 to 20 feet below existing grade, a new sewer manhole, new service laterals, connection to existing laterals, the abandonment of existing sewer manholes on the road, and the elimination of the old W-5 wet well and the W-6 Sewer Lift Station.”

The project started on March 26, 2020, and had an original contract completion date of Dec. 30, 2020.

Villagomez said the project has been extended to October 2021 due to delays involving “permitting agencies, proximity to an existing underground power cable, proximity to an existing sewer line, water line, and other utilities (Docomo and IT&E), as well as unknown underground utilities, hard rock and loose subsurface conditions, proximity to a wetland, excavation 6 to 13 feet below the groundwater level, and proximity to traffic which limits the maneuverability of heavy equipment at the job site.”

Villagomez said the project will also eliminate an existing 8-inch clay sewer line that sits underneath the outer westbound lane.

“This sewer system will directly affect residents living in As Terlaje and Chalan Kiya. RNV Construction, the contractor for the W-6 Sewer Lift Station Elimination project, has installed a total of 680 linear feet of 10-inch gravity sewer main.”

Variety learned that the contract amount for the project was $1.26 million.
