Wendy Robinson cannot use the bathroom in her home on Ash Lane, Low Coniscliffe, when sewage makes it unusable.
Every few months the toilet gets clogged and her sink and shower are flooded with foul-smelling waste.
Mrs Robinson has reported the problem to her housing association, Beyond Housing, and to Robertson, the builder of her house, but none of the solutions seem to be providing a long-term solution.
She fears that there may be a permanent defect in the sewer system in her house.
She said: “I have a huge problem. We are now in a situation where my family and I feel we have to go to the newspapers or to the MP.”
“It’s been like this since I moved in three and a half years ago.”
The house was brand new when Mrs. Robinson moved in.
“It wasn’t until a few months later that I realized there was a problem,” she said.
“My son had to come over regularly to help because it took so long to get the construction workers out.
“Every time something like this happens, Beyond says they'll contact Robertson, the contractors, and then they don't get back to you for weeks.
“When they come and fix the problem, the blockage starts again after a few months.
“It’s hard to talk about, but the sewage is coming from the sink and the shower drain.
“The smell is horrible and I can't use the bathroom. I would have had to move out of this house if my son hadn't been there to help.”
