SPOKANE, Wash. – The I-90 Sprague Lake eastbound safety rest area and RV dump are back in full operation after contractor crews completed repairs to the sewer system.
According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), the new lagoon-style wastewater treatment system is now fully operational, eliminating the need for the portable toilets used at the site since late May.
WSDOT said the repairs were prompted by a routine inspection earlier this year during which crews discovered cracks in the lining of the existing sewer system that led to a leak. Contractor crews replaced the lagoon steamer under contract and restored operations to both the rest area and RV dump station.
The repairs to the Sprague Lake facility's wastewater system are part of a larger maintenance need in Washington's safety rest areas. The 2023 Safety Rest Area Strategic Plan highlighted the need for comprehensive rehabilitation of WSDOT's entire rest area system. The plan estimates that approximately $375 million to $500 million in funding will be needed over the next 15 years to restore, maintain and modernize the state's rest areas.
The Sprague Lake Safety Rest Area and RV Dump is located approximately three miles west of the Sprague/State Route 23 interchange at milepost 242.3.
