Energy Department unveils long-awaited water heater efficiency standards

Today, the Department of Energy unveiled a proposal for new nationwide efficiency standards for residential water heaters.

The proposed standards – which the law requires to be implemented seven years ago – would lower overall household costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The most significant improvement in energy savings would come from electric tank models.

“The recently proposed updated efficiency standards for residential water heaters would result in the largest energy cost savings and greenhouse gas reductions of any appliance standard ever,” said Johanna NeumannExecutive Director of the Environment America Research & Policy Center's 100% Renewable Energy Campaign.
