This latest funding announcement is good news for everyone in Puerto Rico, as there is no safe level of lead exposure.

Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $28.6 million to help Puerto Rico identify and replace lead service lines to prevent lead contamination in drinking water.

According to the EPA notice:
The Puerto Rico Department of Health project will use funds to further the health protection goals of the Safe Drinking Water Act. This agreement will provide funds to replace lead drinking water service lines and support customer and PRASA-owned service line planning, design, and service line replacement. The Department of Health will also use these funds to provide technical support to state program managers and small water system administrators.

“This recent funding announcement is good news for everyone in Puerto Rico, as there is no safe level of lead exposure,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Lead can cause a number of serious health effects, including irreversible damage to brain development in children. It is important to note that lead is rarely found in source water. It usually enters the water supply when it comes into contact with lead-containing piping materials, such as old utility lines. It can also leach from lead pipes in buildings, as well as from solder or from brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and fixtures.”

In fact, lead-containing service lines are still far too common in Puerto Rico and the region. The EPA estimates there are a total of 9 million lead service lines nationwide, based on data from the updated 7th Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey and Assessment.

To protect against lead and other hazardous substances, Zimmetry Environmental professionals provide materials, industrial hygiene and environmental testing, monitoring, consulting and training services. These resources help protect the public and ensure that businesses, utilities and institutions comply with regulatory requirements.
