The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a collaboration with Niles to accelerate the replacement of lead pipes and protect public health.
It's part of the Get the Lead Out initiative, a program funded by the bipartisan infrastructure bill signed in 2021 that aims to help remove lead pipes across the country – helping more than 200 communities.
Through this program, EPA will help Niles take the first steps to identify lead pipes and educate the public about them.
“[The] “EPA is using all available tools, including regulation, funding and this technical assistance initiative, to remove lead from the nation's drinking water once and for all,” said Debra Shore, administrator of EPA Region 5.
A total of $15 million will be spent on replacing lead pipes across the country.
Warren is also working with the EPA and has held public meetings to address the negative public health impacts of lead service lines.
Around 2,000 supply lines need to be replaced in the city.
Like Warren, Niles will conduct surveys in his communities to produce a final report that will show the EPA how many lines need to be replaced by October 2024.
