Evanston intake pipe replacement project starts at northeast end of campus

A project by the City of Evanston to replace an aging intake pipe at a Lake Michigan water facility on the northeast end of campus began Monday, Northwestern Facilities said in an email.

The project is expected to last about two years and will have “minimal disruption” to the university campus. However, some land work will be performed at 555 Lincoln St. The area will remain fenced off during the construction process.

On April 6th and 7th, when a crane is being delivered to the site, there will be sidewalk closures and additional traffic delays in the campus area. Earth retention systems installed in July and August may also cause some noise pollution for students.

The project is will cost $47.2 million and expands the diameter of the inlet to 60 inches. The pipe serves 10 suburban communities and more than 490,000 people.
