Expect Delays on I-40 in Putnam County During Drain Cleaning, Traffic

Motorists in Putnam County should expect delays on I-40 due to planned drain cleanups. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), traffic will be reduced to one lane from Exit 267 to Exit 275 today through tomorrow. Maintenance will occur between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. CT.

The aim of the road closure is to enable the necessary maintenance workers to carry out drain cleaning work quickly. However, the given schedule is subject to favorable weather conditions. TDOT advises that unexpected inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances may result in the postponement of these activities. Motorists planning to travel this route should be prepared to potentially adjust their schedules and are encouraged to plan in advance.

TDOT has confirmed that uniformed police officers will be on site to assist with traffic control and enforce the law. For regular updates on traffic conditions and roadwork, commuters can use tools like the TDOT SmartWay Map or call 511 for statewide travel information. It is recommended that you use both resources before traveling so that safety and preparation are a priority.

The state's moving law, enacted in 2006, is strictly enforced in this operation. Violators face severe penalties, including up to 30 days in jail and fines of up to $500. The importance of obeying traffic rules, especially when workers are present, could not be emphasized more. Drivers are also reminded to never tweet, text or talk on cell phones while driving to ensure the safety of all road users.
