Funding available for lakeside septic system replacement in Cayuga County | Politics

Cayuga County’s lakeside homeowners are eligible for funding to replace obsolete sewage treatment plants.

To protect the lake water, the state-run Environmental Facilities Corporation has opened a second round of funding under the New York Septic System Replacement Fund program.

Cayuga County is participating in the program, according to a press release from the Cayuga County Department of Health. Eligible properties include properties that are within 250 feet of Lake Owasco, Lake Como, Lake Cayuga, and Lake Skaneateles.

This funding will reimburse 50% of the cost (up to $ 10,000) of planning and installing a new sewer system. All designs must be approved by the health department prior to construction. Funding will be available for three years or until exhaustion.

The county encourages property owners with aging or substandard sewage treatment plants to apply to improve water quality.

To apply for the program, complete and return the Septic Grant Program PDF Application Form, which can be found on the county website at cayugacounty.us. Anyone with questions can contact the Cayuga County Health Department at (315) 253-1560.
