Gold Seal Plumbing | Plumbing Tools Every Homeowner Should Have

While we always recommend calling a plumber for all of your plumbing work, we know that not everyone wants or can pay for plumbing. If you need to work on your plumbing yourself, there are tools you can get that will make things easier. After conducting a survey of some of our plumbers, here is a list of tools to keep around your house in case you need to be a plumber for a day.

  • Tongue and spring pliers: Tongue and groove pliers are one of the most useful tools you can have in your house. Also known by the brand name Channellock, these pliers are useful for gripping, tightening, and pulling, among many other uses. They have an adjustable jaw, making them easy to use and ensuring you don’t have to have lots of them cluttering up your toolbox.
  • Multi-Bit Screwdriver: With two Phillips sizes, two Slotted sizes, as well as a few nut sizes, a multi-bit screwdriver will become one of your most used and handiest tools. Removing fasteners becomes a breeze with one tool that lets you loosen and tighten any bolt or nut.
  • Pistons: Almost every homeowner has had a clog at some point that required a plunger. According to our plumbers, if you have both a sink and a toilet plunger (yes, they’re different!) you don’t necessarily need to call a plumber to deal with those tricky clogs. If you’re curious what the difference is, check out this page from The Home Depot: Best Toilet Plungers and Sink Plungers.
  • hand drill: Just like plungers, there are different types of hand drills for sinks and toilets. Hand drills are useful when the plunger just won’t cut. The drain auger is a more flexible cable that allows you to run all your pipes down, while the toilet auger still has the flex cable but has a sturdier rod that properly conforms to the shape of the toilet to clear even the toughest of clogs.

While there are many other tools that can come in handy when working on your plumbing, these are the basic tools that every homeowner should have. And if you’re not comfortable solving your plumbing problems yourself, the best tool you can have is a business card or the phone number of a reputable plumbing company.
