(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) said there was no danger to the community after a fire and chemical spill broke out at an aluminum coating facility overnight into the early hours of May 22. CSFD said the chemicals were contained and not entering nearby storm sewers.
The hazmat teams’ ability to contain the chemicals was thanks to a group of construction workers who saw the chemicals leaking from the building and stopped them from entering the storm sewers.
“Thanks to some good Samaritans, they actually realized that it was a dangerous situation
and they actually started building dams and blocking the storm sewers before the chemicals got into the storm sewer,” said Lieutenant Aaron McConnellogue.
Hazmat squads are working to clean up the leak. They are concerned about the various chemicals that mixed up after the leak. The crews evaluate the toxicity of this mixture.
