RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — Many households in rural areas rely on septic tanks and wells, but sometimes keeping these systems running can be very expensive.
The Virginia Department of Health has a program that can help certain families fix such systems.
The Septic and Well Assistance Program is for homes with systems that need repairs for households with incomes 200 percent or less of federal poverty guidelines.
VDH is using $11.5 million allocated in the 2021 budget to help low-income homeowners repair or replace well and sewer systems.
The state agency says this funding comes from Virginia’s allocation of the American Rescue Plan Act, with the state Office of Environmental Health Services directing the grant program.
