Grohe’s Lewis Neathey: How consumer attitudes are changing sink design

Lewis Neathey, Head of Product Management UK, Grohe, Lixil EMENA, examines evolving consumer preferences and how they are driving a sea change in kitchen sink design.

The traditional way we view and use our kitchens has undergone a real change in recent years, driven by numerous social factors. In particular, the shift towards hybrid work models has significantly changed our lifestyles, forcing us to demand and strive for more functionality and versatility in every room in our home. Kitchens, once primarily associated with food preparation, are now expected to serve a wider range of functions including hosting, socializing, relaxing and working, as we strive to balance our professional responsibilities and our personal lives to bring harmony. Similar to the spa bathroom trend, this development reflects a broader societal trend that emphasizes holistic well-being and adaptability in our living spaces.

With this change in perception, humble fittings such as kitchen faucet and sink are taking on a new meaning and are quickly becoming “all-rounders” as they play an important role in kitchen activities and have a greater significance. A variety of modern, multifunctional designs are now available in the market. Many of us probably spend at least half of our time in the kitchen at the sink. Therefore, it is not surprising that technology has turned its attention to this area to offer solutions that increase user comfort and meet new requirements.

Products such as multi-function faucets and workstation sinks offer a high level of adaptability and efficiency in this area, meeting different user needs while acting as independent design elements in the kitchen. As consumers increasingly seek products that increase convenience and streamline the kitchen, space- and time-saving faucets are increasingly viewed as essential or desirable “must-have” additions to any modern kitchen space. In a 2024 UK kitchen trends study by Houzz, 497 homeowners doing or planning kitchen renovations showed significant improvements. According to the survey, 89% have modernized their sinks, making them one of the top three modernization features of 2024. However, the drive for such products is not just aesthetic or functional.

A recent YouGov study commissioned by Grohe has uncovered some striking statistics about consumer attitudes towards tap water in the UK. The study found that a significant third of people in the UK are put off drinking their local tap water due to concerns about taste and chemical traces, while over 60% of participants said they would no longer buy plastic water bottles in line with this the growing environmental concerns surrounding plastic waste and pollution.

The study's results shed light on just one of many reasons consumers are looking to overhaul their sink setup, highlighting a dual motivation behind changing tap water preferences. On the one hand, taste and quality concerns are discouraging people from consuming tap water, leading to a reevaluation of local water sources and filtering methods. On the other hand, increasing awareness of environmental issues, particularly related to plastic pollution, is influencing consumer behavior towards more sustainable alternatives to bottled water. This convergence of health and environmental concerns reflects a broader societal shift toward conscious consumption and sustainability practices. This, in turn, leads consumers to look for more energy-efficient or less resource-intensive devices, such as cooking-on-demand taps instead of kettles, or filtered water systems like the Grohe Blue Pure instead of single-use plastic.

In conclusion, consumer attitudes have changed towards getting the most out of these spaces as they have become more aware of and more proficient in the various technologies and offerings available on the market, resulting in a redefined home sink setup has led. What began as a noticeable trend in consumer preferences has evolved into a societal shift – one that prioritizes health, environmental awareness and technological innovation, even in this small part of the home.
