Halifax Water and the Halifax Regional Municipality are offering a short-term solution to septic tank problems starting next week.
From Monday, private sewage sludge disposal companies will be able to dispose of their sewage sludge loads “at a safe, monitored location that complies with legal regulations,” according to a joint press release.
This short-term solution comes after GFL West Hants Landfill, a major sewage sludge landfill in West Hants, notified waste management companies last week that it could no longer accept waste from the Halifax area due to capacity issues.
The press release described the problem as an “unforeseen mechanical failure in a private facility.”
The temporary landfill near Aerotech's wastewater treatment plant will be available for up to three weeks.
While private septic tanks are the responsibility of property owners and regulated by the province, Halifax Water Acting Manager Kenda MacKenzie said in the release that the utility and municipality “understand how important septic tank pumping services are to residential and commercial properties to protect health, safety and the environment.”
