Heavy-lift helicopter places pipe segments for repair of South Yuba pipe | News

On Aug. 6, a heavy-lift helicopter deployed the last of six segments to repair the South Yuba Pipe below Spaulding Reservoir. A Type 1 helicopter, which can lift more than 17,000 pounds, was reserved for PG&E in July but was diverted to firefighting. The South Yuba Pipe was damaged during a winter rockfall. Snow prevented crews from accurately assessing the situation and starting to remove hazardous rock and debris until mid-spring. Then scaffolding had to be erected and concrete foundations poured. Now that the new line is in place, crews will weld and install collars. Repairs are expected to be completed by mid-September.
