HENDERSON, Nev. (FOX5) – Months after homeowners in a Henderson neighborhood needed urgent water repairs, they want to know how quickly they will have to pay the city back after covering the cost of the repairs.
Last summer, residents of the Somerset Park townhomes near Pabco and Sunset became aware of sinkholes that needed immediate repairs.
According to the city, the bill totaled hundreds of thousands of dollars. The city has liens placed on the homes, forcing each of the 85 homeowners to pay more than $8,000.
Homeowners in Somerset still don't know how long they will have to pay back all the money as the repayment plan was only an information item on the city council's agenda on Tuesday night and the city council was unable to vote on the proposed repayment plan.
Regardless, homeowners will receive a Notice of Lien from the City of Henderson within the next 10 days. You then have until the end of March to pay all $8,000. The lien is then transferred to their homes.
On Tuesday night, the city council proposed that each of the 85 homeowners have two years to pay back all the money to remove the lien. It would be spread over eight installments.
The first payment of about $1,000 would be due in August. That's far better than the one-year plan Somerset homeowner Irene Montano originally adopted.
“I’m a little relieved that it’s eight instead of four, so that helps.”
Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero said the two-year payment plan is still pending.
“We want to make sure we are accountable to them and accountable to public dollars,” said Henderson Mayor Michelle Romero.
City Council member Carrie Cox is pushing for 12 installments over three years.
“There are a lot of residents there who are barely making ends meet, and when you add a bill on top of the HOA fees that have gone up on top of their mortgages and the responsibilities that they have, that puts them at risk “Not able to stay in their homes,” she expressed.
Montano and the rest of her neighbors say the longer she has to pay, the better.
“Hopefully they expand it to 12, but if not, at least we have the 8 we were counting on,” she said.
The Henderson City Council will vote on either a two-year or three-year plan at a future council meeting.
