STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The New York City civil service exam schedule is open for September, and some jobs pay more than others.
The application period for exams opened Sept. 6.
Exam applications currently open include: accountant; addiction counselor (NYC H+H); associate inspector (highways and sewers); correction officer; electrical engineer; landmarks preservationist; mechanical engineer; police administrative aide; police communications technician; school safety agent.
Open, competitive, computer-based tests are administered throughout each month for various positions. If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online at Online Application System (OASys) or at one of the Computer-Based Testing and Application Centers (CTAC).
Here are the starting salaries, deadlines and job descriptions for each career.
Accountant
Salary: $54,874
Job description, according to DCAS: Accountants, under supervision, perform professional accounting work of moderate difficulty and responsibility internally in City agencies or in conducting field audits and investigations; work independently or with others in executing responsible accounting assignments following prescribed rules of procedure.

Addiction counselor (NYC H+H)
Salary: $54,026
Job description, according to DCAS: Addiction Counselors (NYC H+H), under supervision, with latitude for the exercise of initiative and judgment, participate in the development and implementation of clinically sound, culturally relevant, and medically monitored treatment programs, case management, care coordination and other supportive and consultative services for patients in Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment (e.g., medicated assisted treatment (MAT), ancillary withdrawal, etc.) and promote the notion of recovery and self-sufficiency, as a goal of treatment. Participate in and/or perform functions related to counseling, diagnostics, treatment, treatment planning, rehabilitation, assessment, intervention and other supportive services for patients in SUD treatment

Associate inspector (highways and sewers)
Salary: $73,000
Job description, according to DCAS: Associate Inspectors (Highways and Sewers), under general supervision, perform supervisory work in the inspection of construction, repair and maintenance of roads, sewers and appurtenances, pavements and sidewalks. They supervise the work of inspectors engaged in the inspection of the regulating, grading, paving and repaving of streets, the maintenance, repair and construction of sewers and appurtenances, and retaining walls, streets and street openings, house sewer connections, the construction and repair of water, sewer and utility manholes, street sidewalks, and asphalt and/or concrete plants; and more.

Correction officer
Salary: $47,857
Job description, according to DCAS: Correction Officers, under supervision, maintain security and are responsible for the care, custody, control, job training and work performance of sentenced and detained inmates within New York City correctional facilities. They supervise inmate meals, visits, recreational programs, and other congregate activities; inspect assigned areas for conditions which threaten safety and security; conduct searches in order to detect contraband; complete forms and reports; maintain appropriate log books; communicate with other area Correction Officers to exchange pertinent information; issue verbal orders, announcements and explanations to inmates; observe inmates and make recommendations concerning medical and/or psychiatric referrals; safeguard Department supplies and equipment; escort inmates within and outside of the facility including their transportation in Departmental vehicles; respond to unusual incidents and disturbances; enforce security procedures in accordance with Department guidelines; request medical assistance for inmates when necessary; count and verify the number of inmates present in assigned areas; verify identification of inmates; supervise inmates of either sex; operate a motor vehicle; and perform related work.

Electrical engineer

Job description, according to DCAS: Police Administrative Aides, under supervision, with some latitude for independent action, initiative or decision, perform responsible and difficult clerical, typing, word processing and data entry tasks in a police station or other department unit, command or office. They perform administrative work of moderate difficulty involving the handling of confidential and other information and material; refer members of the public who ask for assistance to the appropriate City agency; utilize manual and automated office systems; type records, reports, forms and schedules; review and verify written information; receive, send, separate and distribute mail; obtain from and transmit information to the public or members of the police department; occasionally perform cashier or messenger duties.

Police communications technician
Salary: $42,976
Job description, according to DCAS: Police Communications Technicians, working under direct supervision in the Police Department Communications Section, serve as 911 call-takers; obtain necessary information from callers in order to initiate emergency assistance; serve as radio dispatchers of police resources; view pictures, videos and listen to audio attachments sent via “Text to 911″; and perform clerical, administrative and other duties related to the provision of emergency service.

School safety agent
Salary: $36,955
Job description, according to DCAS: School Safety Agents patrol designated areas of school buildings and surrounding areas; identify and prevent infiltration of unlawful or prohibited items through scanning; give routine information to visitors and direct them to the proper personnel and offices; request identification of, and remove from the premises, any unauthorized persons; aid sick and injured persons and call for medical, police or fire assistance, when needed; notify supervisors of all emergency incidents and complete any related documentation; respond to altercations between students and other persons, and attempt to separate the involved persons and resolve conflicts; maintain records of persons entering and leaving buildings; monitor security camera systems to ensure facility entrances are secure; identify persons violating Department of Education Rules and Regulations; apprehend persons violating the Penal Law and notify the proper administrative personnel; prepare reports and testify in regard to these violations at Superintendent’s or Principal’s hearings and/or in court; monitor and use radios to request assistance from co-workers; and may operate motor vehicles.
