MORE needs to be done to help the people of Mayo update their septic tanks due to a high failure rate on inspections, it turns out.

Michael Hegarty, chief technician at Mayo County Council, said that from 2016 to date there have been a total of 552 septic tank inspections, of which 408 have failed.

Councilor Peter Flynn said it was a catch-22 with the tanks as many people would like to upgrade them but people are under tremendous financial pressure.

He added that the failure rate of 74% on septic tank inspections in the county is really high and the downside is that it will have a huge impact on water supplies, recreational areas and blue flag beaches.

He welcomed the government’s removal of the means test for the septic tank repair/replacement grant, but said more needs to be done.

He proposed a moratorium on people registering for the scholarship who had not already done so, giving them an opportunity to receive the scholarship.

John Condon, director of services, Mayo County Council, said there was much merit in promoting an amnesty and said a request notice should be submitted to the county council, which Councilman Flynn said he would do.
