When Khalsa bought the 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom house it had a sentencing order against it and was due to be demolished. The house had been empty and full of trash the size of an adult for years. The entire roof over the cave had collapsed, causing the floor to be badly damaged by rain and the elements. It was home to wildlife, was destroyed several times and was so overgrown that it could hardly be seen from the road.

The Khalsa team replaced all plumbing, HVAC and plumbing and rewired the entire house. In addition to the restoration and the replacement of walls, ceilings and doors, the existing wooden floors were refinished, new ceramic tiles were laid and some of the existing floors were restored. In the kitchen, Khalsa replaced cabinets, countertops, and appliances. The bathrooms have been updated with new vanities, toilets, a tub in one and a restored tub in the master. Outside, the overgrown brush and a shabby side deck were removed and a new concrete driveway and steps installed. With new siding, windows and landscaping, the house is no longer recognizable, among other things.

“I love to take the houses we buy and bring new life to them, and this is one of the best examples of that love work,” said Khalsa. “Before I came to HomeVestors, I was an architect and I take pride in good design. It is so rewarding to see what I imagine and then to see the new owners or tenants take pride in having a beautiful home. ”

Khalsa, a lifelong dancer, is a core member and choreographer of the Momentum Dance Lab, a modern dance company in Knoxville. To celebrate the beginning of the next chapter of the house, members of her company joined her for the “An Ugly House Party” shortly after the demolition began. Together they took an evening to improvise the movement through the house together, which resulted in a graceful expression, combined with the removal of blinds, curtains and other elements of the “old” house. They danced through the night with glow sticks at dusk, resulting in a captivating two-minute production that was set to music and featured on YouTube. The fate of the property to become the ugliest house of 2020 is almost prescient.

“When we celebrate our scariest ‘before’ and ‘after’ for the ugliest house of the year, our franchises like Jean and her ingenuity can shine,” said David Hicks, CEO of HomeVestors. “We take something of value that other buyers may not consider and reintroduce it as a desirable and beautiful property, and this home is the epitome of that.”

More than 80 percent of the homes HomeVestors buys are less than 1,400 square feet and were built before 1980. Franchises typically rehabilitate and then sell the homes or keep them as investment properties. We Buy Ugly Houses® local independent small business owners are also helping to increase property values and promote community revitalization by creating a valuable first-time home offering from existing community property.
