How to avoid plumbing issues this Holiday season

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – As the holiday season approaches, many people across KOTA Territory are preparing their kitchens and homes for use.

To avoid plumbing problems during this busy time, city officials are offering a simple but important message: Be kind to your pipes.

A key focus this Thanksgiving weekend is avoiding FOG – fats, oils and grease that can clog sewer lines.

David VanCleave, Rapid City's water treatment superintendent, urges people not to pour mist down the kitchen sink.

Instead, he recommends pouring these liquids into a container, sealing the container and disposing of it.

Additionally, pots, pans, and dishes can be wiped with a dry paper towel before rinsing or washing.

According to VanCleave, improper disposal of even a small amount of FOG can lead to costly and messy sewer blockages.

“If every house in Rapid City had a 12-pound turkey and only 10% of the fat from it went down the drain, that would be around 1,300 pounds of fat, or think of it like 5,200 sticks of butter. So across the board it could be one There will be a lot and we don’t want people’s pipes to get clogged during the holidays,” VanCleave said.

Additionally, VanCleave urges everyone to remind guests to only flush toilet paper.

Items like cloths and paper towels can lead to sewage backups and cause unnecessary headaches during the holidays.
