How to Make Your Small Kitchen Seem Bigger

I moved into an apartment a few months ago that has one of those large vintage sinks with a drain board on either side and I loved it very much. What it lacks in storage, it makes up for in serviceability and general, reassuring robustness. This is a sink that has weathered many human joys and tragedies over the years – all the cut flowers and scorched lasagnas that make up a life. It broke off in places, but who didn’t. Still, with wide ceramic arms, it stands ready to welcome me and the various cups that I have placed on it all day.

And as I was staring towards my wonderful sink it recently occurred to me that it has about as much counter space as some of the tiny apartment kitchens I’ve had in the past. At that moment my last two sad, beleaguered little brain cells looked at each other and said: “Aha!” We should just start making counters out of the sink.

Carry me here In many big cities, small kitchens are the norm. To give a false sense that these kitchens are in some way functional, you often find a deep but narrow sink amid a ridiculous area of ”countertops”. Neither the sink nor the switches really do their job in this arrangement, but you do get a little bit of both so landlords can call it a work area.

What if instead of a small sink with some counter, all you have is one large sink that is the counter too? Isn’t that so much better? How so.

Discreet mood

There is enough space for a cutting board or a coffee grinder or whatever else you want to store and everything is very easy to clean. If you stack dishes on one side, it’s technically still in the sink.

I’m going to take my HGTV show now. Get in, we’ll make counters out of the sink.
