BOSTON – Remember our old friend’s winter? The traditional winter conditions may have been gone for a few years now, but they've found their way home for the holidays.

Icy weather in New England

People in parts of New England may have gotten used to a warmer winter, but the bitter cold is back. Temperatures have fallen sharply in recent days, reaching lows in the single digits in many parts of New England. There are plumbing companies that work overtime.

“We were very active. We had a lot of calls about frozen pipes and no heat calls,” said Dominic Federico, a plumber with 128 plumbing, heating, cooling and electrical installations. “Definitely over 100 in the last week.”

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

He suggests disconnecting the hoses from the outside connections and shutting them off inside to reduce the risk of frozen pipes. He also recommends checking thermostat batteries and making sure no furniture is blocking baseboards.

“With any high-efficiency appliance or water heater, you have to make sure that the vent outside is not frozen or covered in snow or anything like that, because then carbon monoxide will come back into the house,” Federico said.

These tips are especially important in older, less insulated homes. Newer models may have special bells and whistles.

“There is now smart technology that can help you figure out if you have a problem before you even have a problem,” says Federico.

Temperatures are expected to remain cold over the next few days, especially overnight.
