Hundreds of residents in the Panhandle experienced plumbing issues after the snowstorm

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – As snow blanketed the Panhandle, transforming it into a picturesque winter wonderland, many of us were shivering—and so were our pipes. Just as you bundle up with a jacket in cold weather, your outdoor pipes need proper protection too.

“When the temperatures get below freezing, for extended periods of time, overnight, that coupled with pipes not being covered, the bag flow assembly not being covered and protected, it is a recipe for disaster at that point,” said Peaden Air Conditioning, Pluming, and Electrical Services Plumbing Supervisor, Charlie Brown.

Brown says Peaden Services has handled nearly 1,000 calls since the snowstorm began. Most reported issues involved homes without heat, ice buildup on motors, broken outdoor water heaters, and especially, frozen pipes. Plumbing officials say that you must cover and insulate your outdoor pipes and leave a thin stream of water running in order to prevent costly repairs during the winter.

“Any protection that a homeowner can use, whether it’s wrapping with towels, getting some insulation, wrapping Ziplock bags and wrapping towels around them,” says Brown.

According to Peaden officials, repairing a frozen pipe can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $1,800, and then it must be tested and certified, adding extra costs. Additionally, it may lead to damage to your home’s drywall and flooring. That is why being prepared by covering and protecting your pipes before the low temperatures damage them is essential.
