James River Basin Partnership offering rebates for septic tank pumping

SPRINGFIELD, MO (KY3) – An Ozarks group provides incentives for septic tank maintenance.

About 25% of Missouri homes have septic tanks. These septic tanks can affect the quality of our groundwater, rivers and lakes. The homeowner is responsible for pumping out the septic tank every few years.

Nathan Lindsay of German Septic says it costs between $ 200 and $ 400 to pump. The James River Basin Partnership offers a rebate program that can help you cover the cost of pumping your septic tank. Save at least $ 50. It has offered the Fresh Flush discount program for several years.

This year, in partnership with Springfield City and Greene County’s utilities, additional discounts of up to $ 150 are being offered in certain areas to those living in the James River’s upper watershed. Pierson Creek in this area is on the state’s list of impaired waterways for E-Coli. The James River Watershed Group is hoping that more expressing the waste will fix the problem. You can get the discount by using a licensed pumper such as German Septic on a Missouri Department of Natural Resources list and filling out a form.

It is recommended that the tank be pumped every three to five years to avoid pollution of the groundwater.

“It’s very important to keep water clean,” said Lindsey. “When you are at a well, essentially your water flows from your septic tank into your sewage field. If you are at a well and not pumping your tank, you can contaminate your well cavity with sewers. “
