Kejriwal flags off 200 sewer cleaning machines

With the aim of reducing manual cleaning in the city, a fleet of 200 wastewater treatment machines was deregistered by the Prime Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, on Thursday, according to a government statement.

At an event organized by the Delhi Jal Board, Kejriwal said Delhi was the first state in the country to introduce such machines to end the practice of manual sewer cleaning.

Loan assistance

These 200 machines would be given to family members of people who died cleaning drains or septic tanks, plumbing workers currently doing manual flushing, and people from the planned caste communities.

The government will assist the beneficiaries in securing loans for the machines the beneficiaries will own.

The first batch of 50 machines has been handed over to beneficiaries, government officials said. Mr Kejriwal said the government would help beneficiaries to become entrepreneurs.

SC / ST welfare minister Rajender Pal Gautam said the government is committed to community uplift.

The machines allow cleaning up to 30 feet underground, with sewers and silt being removed with a cart.
