Governor Eric Holcomb has signed a local lawmaker's bill that would speed up the replacement of lead water pipes.
According to Indiana Republican senators, State Sen. Eric Koch of Bedford authored the bill, which was signed this week by Gov. Eric Holcomb, that is designed to help protect the health of Indiana residents. The bill allows utilities that have lead service line replacement plans approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to do that work quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively, Koch said.
According to estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there are still more than 265,000 outdated, customer-owned lead water supply lines in use in Indiana, even though the installation of new lead water supply lines has been banned in the United States since 1986.
Koch said the new law will represent a step forward in the fight against lead pollution in Indiana.
Koch's district includes Jackson and Brown counties, Lawrence and Orange counties, and part of Monroe County.
