CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday attended an event at Raja Rathinam Stadium where advanced sewer cleaning vehicles were distributed to sanitation workers as part of the 'Turn Sanitation Workers into Entrepreneurs' initiative.
The program also included the provision of social benefits to beneficiaries.
In his speech he paid tribute to Dr. BR Ambedkar on his death anniversary and highlighted his contribution to social justice and equality.
The Prime Minister announced important measures, including the distribution of modern sewer cleaning vehicles to mechanize and improve the working conditions of sanitation workers.
He also revealed that Rs 500.24 million has been allocated to ensure a minimum monthly income of Rs 50,000 to sanitation workers for the next seven years. Further, he noted that under the Annal Ambedkar Entrepreneur Scheme, 2,136 beneficiaries have received bank loans and disbursed subsidies worth Rs 160 billion, with Rs 33.9 billion allocated to 288 women entrepreneurs.
Stalin highlighted the state government's focus on improving infrastructure in Dalit residential areas through the Ayothidhasar Housing Development Scheme, which has received Rs 1,000 crore in funding over four years. Other initiatives include educational scholarships for Adi Dravidar and tribal students, housing projects for the Narikuravar and Irular communities, and cultural programs celebrating marginalized groups.
Metrowater, the Prime Minister said, has taken significant steps towards mechanizing canal maintenance. Currently, 539 mechanized sewer cleaning machines are in operation, with 58 new units purchased at a cost of Rs 28.55 crore. These are operated by 728 permanent employees and 1,489 temporary workers, ensuring greater efficiency and safety in sewer maintenance.
He also highlighted welfare efforts for sanitation workers, including registering over 300,000 people with the Tamil Nadu Sanitation Workers Welfare Board to provide benefits such as health insurance and housing. He announced the issuance of health insurance cards to 35,000 workers and the construction of 1,000 housing units with 90% government subsidy.
He reiterated his commitment to eliminating manual cleaning and stressed that the government is replacing it with machine solutions to ensure the safety and dignity of workers.
The event was attended by several ministers, MPs, MLAs, senior government officials and leaders of various political and community organizations. The Prime Minister concluded his address with a commitment to continue building a just society through education, employment and socio-economic development for marginalized communities.
