LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) is reminding people about maintaining sanitation on World Toilet Day.
World Toilet Day is on November 19th. MSD said people flushing inappropriate items can cause problems for plumbing systems in homes, businesses, as well as MSD’s wastewater system and water quality treatment centers. Flushable wipes are a problem for MSD.
“Wipes do not disintegrate, even if they say “flushable” on the label,” Daymond Talley, MS deputy chief operations officer, said in a news release. “They twist, get stronger, clog sewer lines and damage pumps.”
According to a press release, wipes are responsible for approximately 60% of the clogs that employees need to fix. MSD said residents should never flush wipes, dental floss, hair, paper towels and tissues down the toilet.
MSD receives more than 156 million gallons of water and waste every day that is flushed down drains and toilets.
