New Calif. law mandates use of lead-free plumbing fixtures

California recently passed a new law requiring “lead-free” endpoint plumbing appliances by 2023.

All endpoint plumbing equipment must meet the NSF/ANSI/CAN 61-2020 performance standard. The sale of devices that leach more than 1 μg/L lead is prohibited.

The law requires that the consumer product packaging or the product labeling of a device must indicate compliance with the “lead-free” standard.

“AB 100 will help reduce the risk of lead exposure in the built environment through certified 'lead-free' terminal equipment,” said Robyn Fischer, director of government relations at IAPMO. “This new law will complement larger efforts underway to help protect California’s water infrastructure and underscores the state’s commitment to maintaining public health and safety.”
