New start for celebrity chef Chelsea Winter as she sells home with dream kitchen

Celebrity chef Chelsea Winter embarks on a new adventure and sells her Bay of Plenty lifestyle property and dream kitchen, which she calls “her old friend”.

Master Chef winner and author Winter has lived at the Te Puna estate for the past three years with her partner Douglas Renall and two young children, three-year-old Sky and seven-month-old Sage.

“Through our journey into parenthood over the past three years, we’ve taken stock of what matters most to us, and while this place we call home will always hold a special place in our hearts, exciting new ones are opening up Opportunities elsewhere,” she says.

Stuff understands Winter and her family plan to remain in Aotearoa and expect to share more as their plans develop.

The home, which is being marketed by luxury real estate brokerage in Tauranga, Oliver Road, has a kitchen designed by and for a professional foodie, and that was what drew Winter to the home.

Since then she has further developed it for her own style.

One of the country’s most popular chefs and cookbook author, Winter moved to the Bay of Plenty from Auckland in 2015, joining her father, who lived in the Mount, and her sister.

She also originally lived in Mount before she and Rennall, who works in the wine industry, moved to Te Puna in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The kitchen has been put to good use. Her latest cookbook, Supergood, was created and photographed at home and became the country’s best-selling title of 2020.

With two sink areas, plenty of linear seating, and a large, beautiful central wooden island, Winter’s kitchen is both the functional center and heart of the home.

“This kitchen has been an absolute dream of mine – this beautiful solid oak island bench has been my home for the last few years. It’s like an old friend now, I will miss it very much.

“Every time I looked up from the sink to see the mountain and the water in the distance, I had to pinch myself. And oh, the space – there’s literally a place for everything you could ever need and more. Such a treat! There are basically no limits to a kitchen like this, and yet it is somehow cozy and inviting.”

The home itself has a “beautifully executed blend of elegant simplicity and designer details”. says real estate agent Cameron Winter.

“Vaulted slatted ceilings throughout a sizable living area and master suite grand piano, floor-to-ceiling wood-effect ceramic tile in two spacious bathrooms, plantation shutters, and a floating concrete stove with a reclaimed wood mantle are just a few.”

Beautiful day and night views of the city of Tauranga, the harbor and Mauao are another draw to the property.

Winter takes as much pride in the outside as it does in the kitchen.

A stunning mix of native and non-native plants installed to inspire the ultimate retreat for body and soul, the landscaping includes 40 olive trees, plane trees, totaras, oaks, citrus, avocado, apricot and apples

“The vision was to bring the land to life by planting many trees. Both for us and for generations to come,” said Renall.

Seven sheep (Winter knows them by name) graze on two paddocks (equipped with four water tanks) around the house.

After a short walk up the path that winds through long grass and olive trees, one can enjoy a 270 degree view of the breathtaking Bay of Plenty coastline.

Next to the main house, a 130 square meter shed with a painted concrete floor could be used as a sports or hobby room.

“It was an oasis of calm and peace for our small family – it’s private but everything you need is close by and there’s no shortage of fantastic nearby beaches for the summer.

“And in the winter? Nothing beats that fireplace.”

It’s a reluctant move for Winter as she obviously loves the property so much but is also open to new beginnings and ready for a new family to move in.
