New tech for Melbourne sewer inspection

As proactive maintenance of water infrastructure becomes increasingly important in the industry, Melbourne is improving its ability to assess its wastewater pipelines with newly developed CCTV camera technology.

Melbourne Water will upgrade nine manhole covers – five in Werribee and four in the South East – to ensure they are large enough to accommodate the new CCTV camera unit. The upgrades began at Werribee in June and the last of the manholes are expected to be completed in November.

The technology enables inspections of up to 4 km along main canals with a diameter of 2 to 4.5 meters.

Tim Wood, general manager of asset management services at Melbourne Water, said the new technology was important as the company removed and treated the majority of Melbourne's wastewater.

“We are excited to utilize the new technology, which will provide enhanced data on the condition of the sewer and the environment within it compared to simply capturing visual images from traditional systems.” This data will help us determine the best and most cost-effective way of care to investigate,” Wood said.

Once the project is complete – planned for later this year – the long-range CCTV camera unit will be deployed across around 100km of the sewer network.

“Maintaining quality wastewater disposal protects public health and the environment. “In Melbourne, a safe, clean and healthy environment is vital to our way of life,” Wood said.
