Newport writer’s The Kitchen Sink Chronicles for Crohns

A NEWPORT woman raised £ 800 from her first poetry collection.

Adele Cordner was born in the city and attended Chepstow Comprehensive School. She worked as a copywriter before turning to creative writing.

The Kitchen Sink Chronicles is a series of poems by Ms. Cordner that, from the perspective of a mother with a vulnerable family member, serve as a diary of the first six months of the pandemic.

The book has grossed £ 800 so far given to Crohn’s & Colitis UK as one of Ms. Cordner’s children.

Ms. Cordner said: “I wrote poetry for a long time, but this was the first collection I put together. I really wanted to get it published so that I could use my writing profits to raise money for Crohn’s & Colitis research. ”

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are inflammatory bowel diseases with no known cause or cure, but medication and surgery can relieve symptoms.

“Since one of my children was diagnosed with this disease a few years ago, I have been surprised at the number of people I have met who also have the disease, especially young people,” said Ms. Cordner.

“It’s a hidden state that people don’t always want to talk about, so there isn’t much awareness of it. I knew very little about it before, but it is a lifelong and debilitating disease that now affects 1 in 100 people in the UK, according to the latest research.

“I have found that we don’t understand enough about the causes of autoimmune diseases and that we need to fund more research in this direction to help future generations. These diseases are on the rise and cost the NHS a lot of money to pay for treatment. I think it’s really important to raise money to research causes and cures and to raise awareness of these invisible conditions that affect so many people. ”

Dedicated to Ms. Cordner’s family and friends, the book takes the reader through vivid details of the events of last spring. It is illustrated by Mrs. Cordner’s daughter Florence.

“It was wonderful working with Florence on the illustrations for the book. We were separated from the pandemic so this was a nice way to get together with a creative project. Your illustrations really complement the poems. Many of the poems are in our house or garden, so I had to send her lots of photos for reference.

“She added her own special touch and we are both very pleased with the end result and very grateful to Hedgehog Press for putting the book together for us. It’s a great feeling that we were able to use our creativity to support such a rewarding charity. ”

The book is available through The Hedgehog Poetry Press, Amazon. Signed copies are available from adelecfolder.com. The purchase includes a donation to Crohn’s & Colitis UK.
