Number One for Number Two: Yelp Reveals List of America’s Most Clogged Up Plumbing Cities for Brown Friday | Yelp

With the holidays just around the corner, nothing can put a damper on a celebration like an embarrassing plumbing emergency. Whether it’s a clogged toilet, a leaking pipe or an overflowing dishwasher, the day after Thanksgiving – known as “Brown Friday” – is one of the busiest days of the year for plumbers on Yelp.

To help connect you with service providers who can help you party-proof your home, Yelp is releasing a list of the 30 cities most prone to plumbing problems on Brown Friday and beyond. After all, the only thing that should be crowded on Thanksgiving weekend is your plate.

After analyzing millions of data points on Yelp for searches related to emergency plumbers — including clogged toilets, leaky faucets and more — Portland, Oregon landed at number one on the list. The city saw a 23% increase in searches for common plumbing problems during the Brown Friday period, comparing searches in the seven days before Thanksgiving Day to searches seven days after Thanksgiving Day in 2022. Portland ranked particularly high in searches for plumbing issues such as “clogged drains,” “drain cleaning,” as well as requests for quotes on Yelp for plumbing services in November and December 2022.

These cities saw the largest increase in searches for common plumbing problems during Brown Friday, compared to searches seven days before Thanksgiving Day and seven days after Thanksgiving Day in 2022.

Rounding out the top five were Virginia Beach, VA, which saw a 22% increase in plumbing-related searches during the Brown Friday period; Raleigh, NC, which saw a 21% increase; Indianapolis, IN with a 21% increase; and Jacksonville, FL, which saw an 18% increase in plumbing problems.

While Los Angeles didn’t make it to the top of the list, Angelenos overwhelmingly took the number one and “number two” spots as the city saw the highest number of quote requests for plumbing projects on Yelp during the holiday season in November and December 2022.

It compares searches in the seven days before Thanksgiving with searches made seven days after Thanksgiving in 2022. Rounding out the list was Los Angeles at number two, Dallas at number three, Riverside, CA at number four and Sacramento at number five.

We identified trends in Yelp users’ searches by measuring the frequency of phrases that appeared per million searches. Trend Statistics specifically analyzed searches associated with keywords describing common plumbing issues searched during the Brown Friday period and compared searches in the seven days before Thanksgiving Day to searches in the seven days after Thanksgiving Day in 2022.” Searches were based on users’ entered search queries and suggested terms or phrases they clicked on.

For the request for proposal data, we analyzed the daily requests for plumbing service projects in November 2022 and the total requests for plumbing service projects in November to December 2022.
