Officials Detect PFAS in Rib Mountain, Wisconsin, Water Supply

There is no obvious source of contamination.

Rib Mountain Sanitary District officials have found elevated levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in one of their water wells.

The water well in Rib Mountain, Wisconsin is now offline, WSAU News reported.

“Residents and companies of Rib Mountain can use and drink the water supply as usual without hesitation,” said Sanitary District Director Michael Heyroth, reported WSAU News. “After receiving the test results, we immediately closed well # 1 and only used water from our other wells.”

The Sanitary District does not violate current DNR standards or regulations, and the Marathon County Sanitary District and Health Department have not identified any health issues related to the PFAS contamination from Well # 1. This fountain is located near the Sanitary District building on Lilac Avenue.

According to Heyroth, there is no obvious source of the contamination.

As part of the planning for a new water treatment plant, four wells were tested. Only hole # 1 showed uncertain PFAS values and the other three holes also showed low PFAS values, WSAU News reported.

DHS officials confirmed during a press conference that the city is cooperating in the investigation, WSAU News reported. In addition, tests are being conducted on all four holes to identify additional concerns

“The water is safe and we took the well offline,” added Heyroth. “We do this out of great caution. We want to make sure that no more water leaks into the system so that people can continue to use the water as usual. “

The city has an information website for customers that includes test results and information about filtration systems.
