Opening up a closed-in bathroom | Thermohydraulics

Q: Hi Ed, we have a small half bath that feels very enclosed. I would like a plusmber replaced the vanity with a pedestal sink to free up space. Is it possible to replace a vanity with a pedestal sink and what may need to be done?

A: The short answer is yes, in most cases it is possible to remove a sink and replace it with a pedestal sink. But depending on the location and the condition of the existing water and drain lines, things can get a little more complicated than you think.

Because plumbing is typically exposed when installing a pedestal sink, specific rough measurements of water and drain lines, as well as finished plumbing materials, may be required.

When meeting with a plumber for this job, a few basic concerns should be addressed beforehand, including: proper padding in the wall needed to anchor the new pedestal sink; when removing the vanity could reveal problems with the floor; and as I mentioned before, when the bathroom plumbing may need to be re-polished.

Once you have all the required sizing information, you can make a final decision based on your budget. However, you can get lucky with the plumbing, walls, and floors you have in place, and if that’s the case, installing your new pedestal sink could be a truly uplifting experience.
