Pipe replacement project to close part of NM Highway 28

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A pipe replacement project will close a portion of the scenic highway from El Paso’s upper valley to Las Cruces for part of this week.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One announced that it will assist the Elephant Butte Irrigation District with pipe replacements along the freeway.

Beginning Tuesday, June 6, NMDOT will close NM 28 at mile post 11.0 (at NM 226, Berino Road) through 7.9 (NM 186, W. Ohara Road) to at mile 10.3 north of Chamberino replacing a drain tube.

A detour will be established at NM 226 or Berino Road to NM 478 and 186, also known as Ohara Road. This lockdown will last about three days. The road is scheduled to reopen on Friday 9 June.

To ensure the safety of motorists and construction workers, the lane will be closed, NMDOT said.
